The historic NIC building is located at Shwe Bon Thor road in downtown Yangon (Rangoon)

The NIC building in downtown Yangon is a unique building with innovative structural system and heritage features. Earlier the building was having offices of Life Insurance Corporation, Oriental Insurance, Embassy of India and others. But due to damaged rainwater drainage system, building deteriorated with passage of time. To renovate this building structural system and heritage values we conducted detail studies including structural. Based on our structural studies, it is found that there are no major structural damages to the building. Structure system of the building is found to be stable. The Embassy of India’s concepts for renovation of NIC Building are based on four visions: a) It will be an urban landmark in downtown Yangon, b) The heritage features of building will be restored, c) This building will be center for cultural activities of Indian Embassy. d) Structurally retrofitting for future stability.
The total project cost was 46,66,086 /- US Dollars. Each floor is planned to for optimum utilization of spaces. Building will have auditorium for capacity of 200 persons on ground floor. First floor and second will have conference hall, library, meeting hall, class rooms, and office of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce. Third floor will have exhibition hall. The fourth floor will have a multi-purpose hall. The design is going to show case the Indian culture through Indian art and craft.. Lotus - the national flower of India will be part of central theme.
The Buddhism is major religious and socio-cultural part of history shared by India to Myanmar. Buddhism in political, economical and socio-cultural part will be exhibited in various art forms in building. The external lighting will focus on concept of making NIC as a land mark building in downtown area. These external lighting will include use of multi-color light patterns on the various architectural feature of the NIC building. These lights will use solar power.
The project have all modern services like firefighting system, VRF air conditioning, modern elevators, and power generators. Building is designed as green building. Solar power will be uses for external and internal lighting. Rainwater will be harvested in the building. This grey water will be used in toilets for flushing. Building will be also designed as barrier free architecture.
Thus the NIC building was restored and adaptively reused to become an urban landmark in downtown Yangon.
